Manufacturers from time to time like to evoke nostalgic feelings in users. This is especially true for gaming giants, both in terms of games and consoles. Not for nothing are regularly released remakes of classic games and consoles. One of these “time machines” was the recently released Sony PlayStation Classic console. The audience it received a mixed reception, there are very real reasons.
What is interesting about Sony PlayStation Classic?
The original Sony PlayStation game console was released in 1994 in Japan and 1995 in the United States and Europe. For sure, there are former owners among the readers, and someone may still have the original one from those times. Sony PlayStation Classic is a visually reduced-size copy of the very first, original PS with HDMI output, two wired USB gamepads of the original design (without sticks) with 20 pre-installed games.
What’s in the box?
The console comes in a medium-sized box with an abundance of beautiful printing: an image of the console itself, a list of pre-installed games, characteristics, and so on. The kit includes the console itself, two classic wired USB controllers, a micro-USB power cable, an HDMI cable, and documentation.
What does Sony PlayStation Classic look like?
Sony PlayStation Classic is a smaller copy of its predecessor. The shape, construction, color and plastic itself are as close as possible to the original, but the dimensions are 45% smaller. It is really very compact, it is much easier to take with you on a visit than, for example, the current PlayStation 4.
How does it work?
Inside the Sony PlayStation Classic installed a fairly modest “iron” by the standards of current smartphones. The filling is closer to the TV set-top boxes on Android. This is a 64-bit Quad-core MediaTek MT8167A processor, which MediaTek itself positioned as an energy-efficient solution for tablets. The processor includes four ARM Cortex-A35 cores with a frequency of up to 1.5 GHz and a PowerVR GE8300 graphics accelerator. RAM — 1 GB DDR3-1866, built-in-16 GB eMMC 5, sound-MediaTek MT6392A. The processor supports video output in 1080p up to 60 FPS.
What to play and how does it feel?
Among the preloaded games, there are versions for different regions (PAL and NTSC), which together with the open free emulator and the MediaTek platform results in some performance problems. In fact, all the games are playable, but some of them have a sagging FPS. For example, in Tekken 3. Despite this, the effect of “sticking” and nostalgia is present: at the first turn on, my friends and I did not notice how “stuck” in GTA and Tekken 3 for several hours. Accordingly, the PlayStation Classic copes with its main task.
In itself, the idea of releasing Sony PlayStation Classic is excellent and correct. The implementation was controversial. On the one hand, the console received a classic, beloved by all nostalgic design, but in a more compact, transportable case. In the kit there is 2 controller, which is good news. And in General, with its main goal to awaken nostalgic memories, it does an excellent job.
On the other hand, the controversial set of games “out of the box”, performance problems in some games and gamepads without sticks spoil the impression somewhat. But these moments can be adjusted with your own hands and download your favorite games. Sony PlayStation Classic is a very good aesthetic addition to the home collection of consoles, which not only pleases the eye with its design, but also allows you to remember your youth and play old games with friends.
